JustFOOD: Action Plan for the Halifax Region

The municipality and the Halifax Food Policy Alliance are co-leading the development of JustFOOD: an action plan for the Halifax Region. JustFOOD is centered on food justice and working together towards a region where no one is hungry, where food and people are celebrated, and our local food system is prosperous and sustainable. A draft Framework has been developed, outlining food systems goals based on the principles of the Halifax Food Charter. Learn more about the origins and foundations of JustFOOD.

In the Spring of 2021, the JustFOOD team will be engaging through a variety of ways to test the draft Framework and work with communities to define what food justice and food sovereignty would look like for our Region. This engagement will include a series of three workshops across food sectors, building on each other through learning more about our local food system, identifying challenges and opportunities, and acting together for positive change. The team have also been raising awareness of JustFOOD during COVID-19 through the distribution of supports for gardening at home, funding emergency food hampers via the Mobile Food Market and through an online survey and storytelling campaign for sharing food experiences during the pandemic.

JustFOOD Food Systems Workshop #1

We are excited to announce our first food system workshop. This is the first of three rounds of JustFOOD Action Plan workshops happening this spring. JustFOOD is based on food justice and working together towards a region where no one is hungry, where food & people are celebrated, and our local food system is prosperous and sustainable, and we can’t do it without your help! The workshop is for anyone working with food or supporting food to come together to learn more about our local food system and what could help make it the best it can be.

The workshops will be held virtually via Zoom, however, we are also offering in-person with WIFI and other supports for joining your session, if that's easier for you. Each workshop session will follow the same format and run for 2 hours. There are three sessions to choose from:

Thursday, March 25, 2021 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 25, 2021 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 27, 2021 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

We ask a few questions to help us prepare for the workshop, which should take about 10 minutes to complete. Thank you for taking the time to become part of JustFOOD!

Food Experience in the Halifax Region During Covid-19 Survey

While COVID-19 affects us all, impacts vary depending on the resources you can access. This time is uncovering strengths, vulnerabilities, and room for growth in our food system. As work begins on JustFOOD, we want to learn from this time so we can improve access to good food and be more resilient and better prepared for future events. So we've developed a short survey and would appreciate hearing how your food experiences have changed, such as, new ways you’ve discovered to access food; new food skills like learning to or spending more time gardening, cooking; and challenges to the way you normally access food. This survey will be live for the next few months to learn more about experiences during the height of the pandemic and as a new “normal” slowly emerges.

Do you have a food story from this COVID-19 time you’d like to share... having fun with a new recipe, making new connections in your community through food, discovering a great food service, etc… Feel free to submit stories, videos, images, and other ways of telling your story. The pandemic has affected members of our community in many ways and it is helpful to hear about each other’s food related stories and experiences during this time.
