Roadside Memorials

Thanks to everyone who responded to our online survey and shared your thoughts on Roadside Memorials. Your feedback is important to us and will help us understand resident interest, concerns, challenges and opportunities regarding the placement of roadside memorials in municipal right of way.

Regional Council has requested legislative amendments to permit the placement of roadside memorials in the municipal public right-of-way. There is currently no policy for the placement of roadside memorials on streets, sidewalks, and rights-of-way in the Halifax region.

The municipality recognizes that roadside memorials are installed by family and friends of persons who have been the victim of a motor vehicle fatality. In some instances, a memorial is erected at a location where a crime has been committed and an individual has passed away. Due to the lack of policy, there have been roadside memorials removed from the municipal right-of-way, which has caused distress to those members of the public who placed the memorials, as well as staff involved in the removal.
